What I gained instead was a personalized glimpse into the social stratum across Europe, political movements, religious turmoil, the growth of civilization rising from the ashes of Rome, and the intricacies of renaissances that spanned architecture, literature, art, education, and government. When I got this book I was expecting a detailed analysis of castle construction, knight fighting strategies, and stories of outlaws protecting the poor from the wealthy nobles. Too much Hollywood and romanticized novels of the time period have skewed my perception of the Middle Ages. When I think of Medieval History, the first things that come to my mind are castles ringed with motes and flanked with dark forests, knights in shining armor, and armies organized by banners and flags waiting for their trebuchets to break down the defenses of the castle they need to storm to rescue a damsel in distress. ![]() Norman, respect for tackling this subject and sticking with it so we of lesser patience can learn from your detailed research and analysis. I envision a couple lifetimes transpiring before such a book would be finished. Is there any other murder in the story aside the death of the angel in Heaven, and the two women's and the child's? (Hmmm, maybe Raguel dies at the end in the elevator, because Lucifer couldn't forgive him?)Ģ. ![]() He doesn't hate Raguel for what he had done, because he understands that he just plays his part of the big plan, as he himself does.ġ. The homeless guy, Lucifer, takes away Raguels memories of these events, to protect him from guilt. Raguel was sent to kill her, as part of God's plan. Her drawing, two angels flying over the perfect city is the depiction of her and her father taking over Heaven. So, Susan is Lucifer's child, the Antichrist or something like that. The only other person who is explicitely described like that is Lucifer. Susan, unlike her black-haired mother, is blonde and beautiful, "just like her father". Why? The clue is in the description of Tink and Susan. The narrator (Raguel) killed Tink, her friend and her child, Susan. He's Lucifer (see his 'I never fell' monologue). He's actually Raguel, the instrument of God's vengeance. ![]() The narrator of the story is not some random guy. ![]() |
